Almar Orchards

Spent a rainy, cloudy, sunny day ( remember I am in Michigan so the current weather lasts only five minutes ) at Almar’s Organic Apple Orchard in Flushing, Mi. shooting their fall apple harvest.

This is an interesting orchard as they are using high density tree planting to increase the land use. Basically they do this by planting the tree rows about ten feet apart, and the trees about three feet apart.

They prune the trees allowing the maximum access for the sun on the leaves. Looks kind of like an apple hedgerow. It’s my understanding that it takes about 40 leaves to support each apple so the main concern is getting as many leaves as possible access to the sun, and not having excess blossoms on a tree. This process seems very interesting. Being organic they do not use sprays but use the many organic techniques to control insects, and diseases. Another very complicated subject.

They provide many family activities throughout the year. The bottom line is that they make the best organic apple cider, and organic hard apple cider. Oh can’t forget the fresh daily made apple cider doughnuts. Definitely worth a visit. Visit them on Facebook at Almar Orchards
